05-26-2010

In celebration of Stroke Awareness Month, the San Diego City Council has designated May 25, 2010, as San Diego Stroke Awareness Day, which is being announced by City Councilmember Marti Emerald at Alvarado Hospital on May 27.

As the first hospital in the western United States to earn dual gold certifications for its stroke acute care and rehabilitation, Alvarado Hospital was selected to host the city of San Diego's declaration. Alvarado Hospital also is a Gold Stroke Award Winner by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for its Get With the Guidelines Program.

On May 28, Alvarado Hospital will honor its “Comebackers of the year.” This luncheon event, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. recognizes survivors of a stroke or brain attack. During the award luncheon, the Comebacker’s Neuro Club will honor an individual with the “Brain Savers Award.” This award is given to an individual who acknowledged the warning signs of stroke and had taken action to promote early intervention and treatment advancing the mission of the AHA/ASA.

The Comebacker’s Neuro Club is for survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury and advocates for stroke awareness and community support. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in this country and the leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Supported by Alvarado Hospital, the Comebacker’s Neuro Club provides ongoing education, support and recreational activities for survivors at any stage of recovery from a stroke, traumatic brain injury or other neurological impairment. The club supports survivors treated at all area hospitals.
