Outpatient Services

Upon discharge from the hospital, you can still benefit from intensive outpatient rehabilitation services to enhance and maximize your recovery. At Alvarado's San Diego Rehabilitation Institute, we provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary team approach tailored for you to function at your highest potential at home and in your community. Physical, speech and occupational therapy specialists work closely with you, your caregiver and/or family, to assure you get the best and most from your important recovery time.

We also offer a number of community-based support groups that you may choose to become involved in—such as the Stroke Peer Visitor Program, Comebacker’s Neuro Club, Artability, and Restorative Golf program. Meet Our Therapists

Physical Therapy


Steven Keller, MPT, C/NDT, CEAS

Steven Keller received his Master’s of Physical Therapy in 2004 from California State University Northridge. He Joined the Alvarado team in 2005 and has enjoyed working with all patient types especially in the neurologic population. He received his NDT certification in 2011 which has given him a better understanding of facilitating movement in his patients with stroke. He is also certified in LSVT BIG which is an intense four week program treating people with Parkinson’s disease. Steve is a certified ergonomic specialist from the Back School of Atlanta and routinely evaluates workstations. He believes in a functional approach to treating his patients and is certified in Applied Functional Science. He enjoys working here because he can see and help his patients go through the continuum of care from the hospital to inpatient rehab then outpatient. He is heavily involved in the SoCal Rehab Golf Tournament held every year in September which pairs two able bodied participants with two people who have a disability. He enjoys keeping in shape by weight training, running, playing golf and snowboarding. He married his college sweetheart, who is also a Physical Therapist, and they have 2 children.



Don Romero PTA, ATC

Don Romero graduated from Point Loma Nazarene College in 1989. He has a B.A. in physical education with emphasis in Athletic Training. In 1991 he became certified in athletic training and worked as an athletic trainer for a junior hockey team based out of southern California. In addition, he began working in sports medicine/physical therapy. Don became a licensed physical therapist assistant in 1993 and joined the dynamic physical therapy team at Alvarado Hospital outpatient in 1996. Don is proficient in myofascial release and various manual skills. He enjoys working with a variety of patient populations. Don has a wonderful wife and 3 sons. He loves to play guitar and bass, taking walks with his wife, cycling, going to the gym and playing golf.



Kerri Caswell PT

Kerri is the Lead Physical Therapist at Alvarado Hospital/San Diego Rehabilitation Institute. She received her physical therapy degree in 1993 from Stockton University in New Jersey. She has been a practicing physical therapist for 23 years and has spent the last 18 years at Alvarado. She is very well rounded in her skills as a physical therapist. She has experience in numerous settings and has the ability to work with many different patient diagnoses. Her passion has been working with individuals in an outpatient therapy setting. She currently specializes in Women’s health and pelvic floor dysfunction, she has a certification in Vestibular/Inner Ear Balance Disorders she received from Emory University in 2003 and is also certified in LSVT BIG. She works closely with her patients in providing comprehensive assessments. She uses specific therapeutic techniques in developing thorough treatment programs for individualized care of each patient. She truly believes exercise is medicine and strives to educate this to her patients.



Andrea Reeves, PT, Cert. MDT​

Andrea Reeves received her Physical Therapy degree from California State University, Long Beach in 1998. She joined the Alvarado Hospital Medical Center/San Diego Rehabilitation Institute team in 1999 where she originally spent her time as a PT on the Transitional Care Unit providing Inpatient care to patients in the hospital to help them return home. Andrea eventually joined the Outpatient PT team in 2000 where she has become the primary Orthopedic Physical Therapist, treating diagnoses such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder, elbow and hand issues, hip, knee and ankle issues, fractures, post-surgery recovery and rehab, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain disorders. Andrea ran the SpineZone PT clinic at Alvarado Hospital for three years, which was an evidence based, outpatient spine-strengthening program. It specialized in treating chronic and subacute back and neck pain, including those trying to avoid surgery as well as those that had surgery. Andrea became certified in the McKenzie Method – Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) in 2011 which is an internationally acclaimed method of assessment and treatment for spinal and extremity pain. She is also certified in LSVT BIG which is an intense four week program treating people with Parkinson’s disease. Andrea is a native of San Diego and enjoys spending time with her husband, son, daughter and dog. She does Polynesian dancing to stay healthy and fit and enjoys staying active. Andrea’s top goal is to decrease our patients’ pain and help them become more functional and active, so they can return to enjoying an improved quality of life.

Occupational Therapy


Tina Truong, OTR/L

Tina Truong received her degree in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University in 2002. She started her career at San Diego Rehab Institute in 2003 and since then developed a passion for neurological rehab especially stroke. She has certifications in Saebo Arm Training and LSVT BIG treatment for Parkinson's. She participates in the Comebackers Neuro Club, is a contributing editor on the Savvy Survivor Newsletter, and active participant in the Stroke Peer Visitor Program. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family.

Speech Therapy


Julie Cunningham, M.A., CCC-SLP

Julie Cunningham received her master’s degree in speech-language pathology at San Diego State University. She joined the team at Alvarado in 2016, where she has had the opportunity to work with patients at all stages in their recovery. She has experience working with a variety of disorders including voice, speech, language, cognition, and swallowing. Her passion is working with adults to help them feel fulfilled in their ability to communicate and participate fully in their lives. She enjoys collaborating with otolaryngologists (doctors who specialize in ear, nose, and throat disorders), physical and occupational therapists, and the rest of the medical team to provide the most comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan possible. She lives with her fiancé and their ginger tabby cat. She likes hiking, camping, and exploring all the neighborhoods in San Diego.
