Internal medicine specialists (also referred to as “internists”) follow patients throughout the patient’s life. Because they study the whole range of adult diseases and conditions, they are able to deal with complex diagnostic problems and help patients who have multiple, chronic diseases or conditions. They can also help facilitate treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues.

Your internist will be involved in your care no matter where you go. He or she will see you in the clinic or office setting. If you are hospitalized, your internist will visit you there and monitor your progress. Even if you’re in a nursing home, your internist will handle your care. Your internist will also be able to offer recommendations to other specialists, and will help coordinate your care with these physicians.
