Sexual Medicine Program



The sexual medicine program at Alvarado Hospital takes into consideration multidisciplinary health concerns.
 
Sexual medicine provides patient care, education, and research in this specialized field. Sexual medicine attempts to improve sexual health through the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of conditions or diseases that involve sexual function.
  • For men, the arteries in your penis are smaller than in your heart. Having erectile dysfunction is like having a heart attack in your penis. Taking care of your erectile dysfunction literally may save your life.
  • For women, what is causing your dysfunction also may be causing mood swings, muscle weakness and even osteoporosis. Treating your sexual dysfunction may ultimately lead to better bone density and muscle mass.
Alvarado Hospital’s sexual medicine program is a multidisciplinary program. What that means to you, the patient, is that you can be cared for by a team of professionals with special training in sexual medicine. The program is founded on evidence-based medicine, providing state-of-the-art healthcare in the field. Other contributors to the sexual medicine program are from physical therapy, radiology and urology.
 
Supporting services include bariatrics, endocrinology, gynecology, neurology, oncology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine and sleep medicine. The operating room at Alvarado Hospital is equipped with a special procedure table and microscope for penile revascularization surgery. Alvarado clinicians are specially trained to be sensitive to your needs and provide quality care.
 
You are at risk for sexual dysfunction if you:
  • Have cardiovascular disease
  • Use cardiovascular medications
  • Have diabetes
  • Have hypertension
  • Smoke
  • Ride bicycles (more than three hours/week)
  • Are a man 50 years or older
  • Are peri- or post-menopausal
  • Have low testosterone or DHEA
  • Have used oral/patch contraceptives
  • Have been treated for infertility/endometriosis/painful menstruation
  • Have lower urinary tract symptoms
  • Take anti-depressants
  • Have anxiety
  • Had prostate/bladder/breast cancer
  • Have given birth
  • Have had a hysterectomy
