Sleep Center
Understanding the most common sleep disorders—sIeep apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, narcolepsy, sleepwalking and sleep disorders in children—is one of the first steps toward seeking help. If you’ve been told or think you have a sleep disorder, this section is meant to help you as you work toward a good night’s sleep.

Alvarado Hospital specialists can provide sleep studies, consultation or treatment for the following conditions:
Tools to Determine Sleep Disorders
To better speak to your physician about your sleep issues, the two following tools may be useful. The first tool is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale Test. This is a widely used test by sleep medicine specialists to determine if a person is sleepy. Print this out and share with your physician. The second tool is a sleep diary. For more information on the sleep diary, go to the Web site of the National Sleep Foundation.
Sleep Disorders in Adults
To feel completely rested, the average adult needs approximately seven to nine hours of sleep. Most people take sleep for granted until they suffer from a sleep disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention and health promotion. Insufficient sleep, on the other hand, has been associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, stroke, diabetes, obesity, motor vehicle accidents, premature aging and a general lack of energy or enthusiasm for life. More than 100 different sleep disorders have been identified and grouped into four main categories:
- Problems with falling and staying asleep
- Problems with staying awake
- Problems with sticking to a regular sleep schedule
- Sleep-disruptive behaviors
If you can’t remember the last time you enjoyed a good night’s rest and woke up feeling refreshed, the specialists at Alvarado Hospital are here to help. Our comprehensive Sleep Center offers a full spectrum of care for adults and children. From consultations, diagnostic tests and complete sleep studies to state-of-the-art medical and surgical treatments, the specialists at Alvarado Hospital can help change your life.
Many sleep disorders share similar symptoms among themselves and other diseases. To rule out other possible causes for these symptoms, your physician must do a thorough diagnosis. Some methods of diagnosing sleep disorders and determining their severity may include a personal history interview, sleep history and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale Test.
