The World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) honored Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of the Sexual Medicine Program at Alvarado Hospital and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine, with the International 2009 Gold Medal Award for his lifetime achievements in the field of sexual medicine.
The Gold Medal Award is the highest recognition from WAS and was created to formally recognize significant contributions in the field of sexual medicine. Dr. Goldstein delivered an acceptance speech in June at the opening ceremony for the XIX World Congress in Goteborg, Sweden.
“I am honored to have been named a Gold Medalist for Lifetime Achievement in Sexual Medicine by the World Association for Sexual Health,” said Dr. Goldstein. “This award is especially important to me because it is based on continuous achievements, rather than a single event. This international award validates my decision to move to Alvarado Hospital in San Diego to pursue the first-ever department of sexual medicine, after many years of practicing sexual medicine within the traditional framework of a department of urology. I accept the award as broader recognition of the field of sexual medicine, rather than merely a personal accomplishment.”
