SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE: As the leader of Alvarado Hospital, what are your priorities?
ROBIN GOMEZ: In short, my priorities are to ensure Alvarado Hospital meets the needs
of our community. There are two factors driving change in healthcare:
Th e influx of new patients as a result of the Aff ordable Care Act and
the increase in geriatric patients as the baby boomer population ages.
These changing demographics are leaving gaps in our county’s healthcare
delivery system that we are looking to fi ll through advanced technology,
new programs, expanded emergency services and renewed focus on patient
This year, we are opening a 30-bed geropsych unit for seniors with mental
health and medical conditions, and we are partnering with Seasons Hospice
to open a hospice unit on our campus. Th is should go far in meeting this
SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE: What are you most proud of?
ROBIN GOMEZ: Alvarado is one of only two California health systems to be distinguished
as part of the “Top 15 Health Systems” in the nation. Top
health systems are recognized for following recommended standards of care
more closely, having fewer safety errors and higher patient satisfaction
scores, which means our neighbors have access to top-tier care.
