Alvarado Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare, has been named by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Servicestm and Spine Surgerytm for 2018. This makes it the fifth year in a row that Alvarado has achieved this national recognition. The hospital has also been recognized with five-star ratings in cardiac care, gastrointestinal care, critical care, and bariatric surgery. It also has won excellence awards for orthopedics and bariatric surgery, according to this year’s evaluation from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*

“To be identified as one of the top hospitals in the nation is quite an achievement,” says Alvarado CEO, Robin Gomez. “And the fact that this is the fifth year in a row that we’ve been recognized for our spine and orthopedic surgeries is remarkable. I am very proud of our physicians and staff for this achievement, and thank them for their vital role on caring for our community.”

These achievements are part of findings released today by Healthgrades and are featured in their2018 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes.

Alvarado has long been known as a center for excellence for surgery, especially its San Diego Spine & Joint Institute, and that is reflected in the number of times the hospital has been recognized by Healthgrades. In addition to the “America’s 100 Best Hospitals” awards, the hospital has achieved “Excellence Awards” in orthopedic and spine surgery; “Top 5%” recognition for spine surgery and overall orthopedic services; and five-star ratings for the treatment of hip fractures and spinal fusion surgeries. Alvarado also received five-star recognition for the treatment of sepsis, gallbladder removal surgery, and for pacemaker procedures, an Excellence Award for bariatric surgery, and a Patient Safety Excellence Award the past three years (2015-17).

“Consumers place high value on information about hospital quality and use it to evaluate their choices for care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Hospitals that have achieved recognition for their quality outcomes prove their commitment to their patients and their community at large.”

*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
