Inspire Therapy

Alvarado Hospital is the first in San Diego certified to offer Inspire
Therapy. Inspire Therapy is a new, clinically proven treatment option,
approved by the FDA, for people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Our doctors and staff are equipped to counsel and help you determine if
you would be a good candidate for this treatment option. Alvarado is the
first hospital in San Diego to offer Inspire therapy.
Inspire Therapy is specifically designed for people with moderate to severe
OSA who are unable to use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
Among its many advantages, Inspire Therapy is fully implanted, does not
require a mask or oral appliance, works with your body's natural anatomy,
and is simple and easy to use.
About Inspire Therapy
Inspire therapy is a promising, new, clinically proven treatment option
approved by the FDA:
-
Clinically proven to reduce sleep apnea events and improve quality of life
and daytime functioning
- Fully implanted, it does not require a mask or oral appliance
- Designed to work with your body's natural anatomy and breathing processes
- Simple and easy to use
While CPAP and oral appliances work from "the outside in" during
sleep to prevent your tongue and other soft tissues from relaxing and
obstructing your airway, Inspire Therapy works from "the inside out."
Inspire therapy is a small, fully implanted system that continuously monitors
your breathing patterns during sleep. Based on your unique breathing patterns,
the system delivers mild stimulation to key airway muscles, which keeps
the airway open.
The Inspire system consists of three, fully implanted components: a small
generator, breathing sensor lead, and stimulation lead, all controlled
by the small, handheld Inspire sleep remote.
"We believe that this therapy represents a major advance in sleep
apnea treatment, especially for vulnerable patients who cannot achieve
benefit from CPAP," said
Dr. Brian Weeks, the first San Diego physician trained to offer this procedure and the
only physician offering it currently. "Untreated moderate-to-severe
OSA places patients at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, accidents
and death. Inspire therapy provides us with an effective new treatment
to use in a select group of our CPAP-intolerant patient population.
