The San Diego Rehabilitation Institute provides therapeutic recreation
for inpatients and outpatients. Staffed by two therapeutic recreation
specialists, our comprehensive program provides resources and activities
to help stimulate our rehabilitation patients socially, mentally, physically
One of our most popular recreational activities is BBQ Tuesdays! Patients
and their loved ones are invited to the BBQ (lunch or dinner depending
on the season) on our rehabilitation patio as weather permits. This is
an excellent opportunity for patients to socialize with each other, along
with friends and family. The hospital's therapy dog, Kiva, is always
on hand for a meet-and-greet at the BBQ.
To create a more homelike atmosphere, our unit features a large family
and patient lounge with tables, couch and armchairs for socializing or
to watch TV. The room also has a piano. Each of our large patient rooms
is equipped with a TV and a large DVD library is available.
In addition, our unique Peer Visitors program is provided through our recreation
therapy department. Our peer visitors visit hospitalized stroke survivors
and their loved ones to provide support, education and conversation.
Example of recreational therapy offerings:
All rehabilitation patients are encouraged to join the free Alvarado Advantage
Club, which offers free daily newspaper while hospitalized, VIP parking
and cup of gourmet coffee for visitors.
