When you are struggling with severe obesity, losing weight can seem like an impossible challenge. Those with severe obesity are 90 pounds or more overweight or have a BMI of 35 or more. Those who struggle with weight are also susceptible to many obesity-related health conditions.

Fortunately, there are ways to help lose weight safely and efficiently. Dr. Julie Ellner, a bariatric surgeon, has put together the three best ways to reach a healthy weight:

  • Gastric Banding: Gastric banding (also referred to as Lap-Band) is one of the least invasive treatments for morbid obesity. It induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food that can be comfortably consumed. During the procedure, surgeons implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient’s abdomen. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness, making it easier for patients to lose weight by consuming less food.

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass: This minimally invasive surgical procedure is considered to be the most advanced and most successful procedure for weight-loss surgery. In this procedure, a small stomach pouch is created. The remainder of the stomach is not removed, but is completely divided from the smaller stomach pouch. The outlet from this newly formed stomach pouch is then connected directly to the area where digestion takes place.

  • Diet and Exercise: Diet and exercise is always a recommended cure for patients who have the mental drive to stick with it. Although this can be the most challenging way for the severely obese to lose weight, the lifestyle change can be both physically and emotionally rewarding. Working with a personal trainer and nutritionist are a great way to ensure the weight-loss methods are appropriate for each patient’s body.

The Surgical Weight-Loss Program at Alvarado Hospital focuses on a multidisciplinary program to achieve their patient’s weight loss goals. This includes follow-up care such as support groups and counseling, as well was access to therapists and dieticians.

Alvarado offers free seminars and people can meet one-on-one with one of Alvarado’s bariatric surgeons who will discuss the risks and benefits of banding and bypass surgeries.
